Etymology

A singular form of a word Muslim comes from either the Arabic plural form 'Al-MuslimÄ«n, from either a tri-consonantal root SLM, also witnessed in the words Islam & salÄ?m. A plural form is instanced in the Qur'an, 22:79, Al-Hajj.

Pronunciation and spelling
Until recently a word was too spelled Moslem. Muslims don't recommend this spelling because these are typically pronounced "mawzlem," which sounds somewhat similar to an Arabic word for "oppressor" (Za'lunar module within Arabic). The most common mispronunciation of the word Muslim is “muz-lim�. That is, a letter "s" is pronounced as a "z." Instead, a word should exist when pronounced as these are written, "mus-lim."

Other words for Muslim

Numbers of English-language writers utilized to call for Muslims "Mohammedans" or even "Mahometans," meaning "followers of Mohammed," however this nomenclature is considered wrong & insulting, because Muslims guess it implies that it worship a prophet Muhammad, contrary to the basic principle of Islam itself.
